Why Pavers Are Different

A paver surface is made of many small units held in place by sand in the joints. Cleaning has to reach between the pavers without stripping out all of that sand, because the joint sand is what keeps the units interlocked and stable. Too much pressure blows the sand out and can dislodge or chip individual pavers.

Paver surfaces also collect more than algae. Efflorescence, the chalky white bloom seen on newer installations, is mineral salt migrating to the surface as moisture evaporates. Leaf and berry tannins leave brown staining. Weeds and moss establish in degraded joints.
